AI adoption

We find ourselves in a sense of suspended animation, waiting for the next wave to hit.

Before all major changes - the industrial revolution & information age - we make a swag of predictions about how things will be. Many are bang on and many are so off the mark to make for good lols in hindsight.

One thing many are starting to get right is that AI adoption in these early phases comes down to getting people to buy-in & simply start using it. How this is done is less known. After all, how do you get people to get out of their comfort zone and start figuring out how to use a technology that will replace their way of earning a living in fairly short order?

AI adoption is an exercise in culture change. This is something the big consulting firms have honed to a fine art, thanks to the pillars listed below. And the organisations who get it right make the tough decision upfront, like going after a bold vision (vs tweaks to BAU) and cutting staff across the board who don't get onboard.

Instead what we're currently seeing is organisations isolating AI rollout to user training and support. The result tends to be - after a fast start of rapid training rollout and an initial spike in interest - adoption wanes to leave predominantly AI enthusiasts to navigate potential usage pathways. Progress is slower than planned and nothing much else changes.

Like all cultural change, adoption needs to be leader-led, from the top, and embedded into everyday conversations – the stories we tell each other – and organisation structures, from recruitment to reward & recognition. It comes down to a few pillars:

  • Leadership alignment

  • Behaviour change

  • Structural alignment
